๐ฎ Game Basics
Wuthering Waves is an open-world action RPG with gacha elements. You play as the Rover, an amnesiac protagonist who wakes up in the world of Solaris-3 and discovers they can absorb the powers of defeated monsters (called Echoes).
The game is completely free-to-play. All story content, exploration, and events are accessible without spending money. The gacha system is only for obtaining new characters and weapons faster.
Don't rush the main story. Take time to explore each region as you unlock it โ you'll find chests, puzzles, and collectibles that give valuable rewards including premium currency (Astrite).
Key Resources
โ๏ธ Combat System
Wuthering Waves features a fast-paced, action-oriented combat system. Unlike turn-based gacha games, you'll actively dodge, parry, and chain abilities in real-time.
Core Mechanics
- Basic Attacks: Your normal combo. Different characters have different attack patterns.
- Heavy Attack: Hold the attack button for a charged strike. Some characters have unique heavy attacks.
- Dodge: Time it right to trigger a Precision Dodge โ slows time briefly and lets you counter.
- Resonance Skill: Your character's special ability (E skill). Has a cooldown.
- Resonance Liberation: Your ultimate ability (Q skill). Requires energy from attacking.
- Forte Circuit: A unique mechanic per character. Read each character's kit carefully.
- Intro/Outro Skills: Special abilities triggered when switching characters.
Concerto System (Character Swapping)
The heart of WuWa's combat is the Concerto system. Build up Concerto Energy by attacking, then switch characters to trigger powerful combo effects:
- Switching with full Concerto triggers the outgoing character's Outro Skill
- The incoming character performs their Intro Skill
- These skills often provide buffs, healing, or massive damage
- Building teams around Concerto synergy is key to high-level play
Don't just button-mash. Learn your character's Forte Circuit and use Precision Dodges. The best players spend 80% of their time dodging and 20% attacking โ you can't deal damage if you're dead.
๐ฅ Elements & Reactions
There are 7 elements in Wuthering Waves. Each element has a unique "Frazzle" effect when applied to enemies:
When you hit an enemy with elemental attacks, you build up their Frazzle gauge. Once full, the enemy enters a Frazzle state of that element, taking bonus damage and enabling powerful reactions when hit with other elements. Matching your main DPS's element to the corresponding Sonata Effect (Echo set bonus) is the foundation of good team building.
๐ค Character Roles
Every character fills one or more roles in a team. Understanding roles helps you build balanced teams:
- Main DPS: Your primary damage dealer. Spends the most time on-field attacking. Examples: Jinhsi, Cartethyia, Carlotta
- Sub-DPS: Deals damage through skills and off-field abilities. Swaps in, uses skills, swaps out. Examples: Changli, Phoebe, Yinlin
- Support/Buffer: Provides buffs, shields, or utility. Often triggers powerful Concerto effects. Examples: Shorekeeper, Roccia
- Healer: Keeps the team alive through healing. Almost mandatory for hard content. Examples: Verina, Baizhi
A standard team is: 1 Main DPS + 1 Sub-DPS + 1 Support/Healer. The Main DPS stays on field, the Sub-DPS swaps in for skills, and the Support provides healing and buffs. Build around your Main DPS's element for Sonata bonuses.
๐ฒ Gacha & Banners
Wuthering Waves uses a gacha (random draw) system for new characters and weapons. Here's what you need to know:
Banner Types
- Character Event Banner: Featured 5-star character with rate-up. 80-pull pity, 50/50 system.
- Weapon Event Banner: Featured 5-star weapon. 80-pull pity with targeted selection.
- Standard Banner: Permanent pool of characters and weapons. Uses Lustrous Tides.
- Beginner Banner: Discounted first 50 pulls. Guarantees a 5-star standard character.
Pity System Simplified
- Every pull on a banner counts toward "pity"
- At 80 pulls, you're guaranteed a 5-star
- First 5-star has 50% chance to be the featured character
- If you lose the 50/50, next 5-star is guaranteed featured
- Pity carries over between banners of the same type
- Weapon banner has separate pity from character banner
As a beginner, only pull on Character Event Banners. Don't spend Astrite on the standard banner โ you'll get standard banner pulls for free through gameplay. Save your premium currency for characters you really want.
๐จ Building Characters
Once you get a character, here's how to build them:
Priority Order
- Level up to 80/90 โ Unlock all Forte levels
- Upgrade key Forte talents โ Main damage skill first, check build guides for priority
- Level weapon to 90 โ Big ATK boost
- Farm Echoes โ Get correct main stats first, then optimize substats
- Ascension โ Raise level cap at Ascension milestones
Stat Priority for DPS
General rule: CRIT Rate to 70% โ CRIT DMG โ ATK% โ Elemental DMG Bonus
Aim for roughly 1:2 ratio (CRIT Rate : CRIT DMG). 70% CRIT Rate with 140% CRIT DMG is a solid target. Go higher if you can.
๐ Echo System
Echoes are equippable items that provide stats and abilities. They're the core of character customization.
How Echoes Work
- Each character can equip 5 Echoes
- Echoes have a Cost (1, 3, or 4) โ total cost cannot exceed 12
- Standard loadout: 4-cost + 3-cost + 3-cost + 1-cost + 1-cost = 12
- Each Echo has a main stat and up to 5 sub-stats
- Equipping 2 or 5 Echoes of the same set activates Sonata Effects
Sonata Effects by Element
Always match your main DPS's element:
- Spectro: Eternal Radiance โ Crit Rate +10% and Spectro DMG Bonus
- Aero: Sierra Gale โ Crit Rate +10% and Aero DMG Bonus
- Havoc: Moonlit Clouds โ ATK Speed +15% and Havoc DMG Bonus
- Glacio: Freezing Frost โ Crit DMG +30% and ATK Bonus
- Fusion: Molten Rift โ ATK +15% and Fusion DMG Bonus
- Electro: Void Thunder โ ATK Speed +15% and Electro DMG Bonus
Don't obsess over perfect substats early on. Getting the correct main stats and the right 5-piece Sonata is 80% of your Echo power. Substat optimization is endgame min-maxing.
๐ Daily & Weekly Routine
Efficient daily play keeps your account progressing without burning out:
Spend Waveplate on boss drops or Echo domains โ Complete daily missions โ Check redeem codes โ Send out expeditions
Clear Tower of Adversity โ Defeat all weekly bosses โ Check event progress โ Buy items from shop with weekly currency
Complete all limited events โ Pull on desired banners โ Explore new areas โ Update builds for new characters
Waveplate regenerates at 1 per 6 minutes (240 per day max). Never let it cap at 240/240 โ you're losing regeneration. If you're busy, just spend it on quick boss kills rather than letting it waste.
๐บ๏ธ Exploration Tips
Solaris-3 is packed with secrets. Here's how to explore efficiently:
- Activate all Resonance Beacons (teleport points) first โ makes everything faster
- Follow the golden threads โ they lead to puzzles and chests
- Use your Sensor to detect nearby collectibles
- Grapple points and walls are climbable โ reach high places
- Chests respawn in some areas, so revisit old zones
- Complete all puzzles โ they give premium currency and upgrade materials
Exploration Rewards
Fully exploring a region typically gives: 2,000+ Astrite, weapons, Echo materials, and namecards. The Astrite alone is worth 12+ gacha pulls โ significantly more than most events.
โ ๏ธ Common Beginner Mistakes
Don't try to level every character. Focus on your main team of 3 first. Getting 3 characters to level 80 is better than having 8 characters at level 40.
Build your healer early. Verina or Baizhi will carry you through hard content. A dead DPS deals zero damage.
Save your Astrite for Character Event Banners. You'll get enough standard pulls for free. The featured characters on event banners are generally stronger than standard ones.
The Concerto system is where most of your damage comes from. Don't just stay on one character โ learn to swap frequently and trigger Intro/Outro skills.
Don't salvage Echoes with good main stats just because the substats are bad. Main stats matter much more than substats, especially early on. A CRIT Rate% Cost 4 Echo is valuable regardless of substats.
